My Mother the Organizer

As I learn all this stuff in school about community development, I realize I was raised by an organizer who believes strongly in empowering people. Though she appears to the outside world as a nurse, administrator, shopaholic, really she is a rabble-rouser who helps people help themselves. It’s very cool to realize I’ve seen a lot of this stuff in action.

There’s a really cool quote in this article that made me write this post. It’s about how communities need rules as much if not more than they need resources. Something many people might not like to hear, but not my mom. The article says, “The ultimate empowerment is making your own rules for your own community.”

I get what I’ve learned from my mom, and hope I can help my more overt but somewhat less organized freedom-fighting colleagues make a difference in the world.
